Millennium Photo Display

The photos on this page were in a display during the Guilden Sutton Village Millenium celebrations.  The "Old" photos are part of Arthur Willis' collection.  The "New" ones were taken in 2000 by John Beavan, who also provided the captions.  The display provided us with an opportunity to see the changes that have taken place during the 20th century.

Dave Hall & Jim Lamb in the archway of the trap house at "Hall Farm" circa.1920 Now No 1 The Stables - No sign of the archway now, although they can still be seen on many of the other dwellings Once known as Annie Hughes Hill with "Tile Bank" & "Hill Farm".  The cottages were demolished in the 1960's Bungalows have replaced the cottages in Wicker Lane. This type of fence is unique to Cheshire.

Old Hall Park

Before conversion in the late 1970's (The house was built around 1716 with bricks from the brickyard which used to be opposite) There are few changes in this elevation, apart from the additional dormer window. A fine half timbered building, which was one of Guilden Sutton's main residences. (Photo taken around 1932) The bungalows at the top of Old Hall Park were built on the site of "The Old Hall" after demolition in the 1960's

Known as "Mrs Beckett's Farm" - it was one of the oldest buildings in Guilden Sutton. The outbuildings in the early 1980's. Now converted to 3 Dwellings. The sandstone bases of the gateposts were cheese weights used to press the whey from the cheeses which were made at the farm. 1977 Jubilee celebrations on the Parish Car Park, Church Lane.  (Note Hughes's Freezer Centre in the background) A street party in Hickmore Heys on 2nd January to celebrate the Year 2000

"The Bird in Hand" - there has been an inn on this site for 400 years. The present building replaced one with a thatched roof which was destroyed by fire in late 1800's (Photo c1925) Few changes externally except for the entrance, which is now via a porch at the side. "Mount Farm" - demolished in 1960's. It was once known as the preaching house as Methodists met here before the building of their church in 1873 "Tall Trees" in Church Lane was built on the site of "Mount Farm"

"The Byatts" - a typical Cheshire farmyard made of cobblestones (Note the pig sties in the centre) Photograph taken around 1930 The old farm buildings are now in the process of conversion to distinctive dwellings.
