HALL EXTENSION
I have mentioned several times over the last twelve months or so about the possibility of an extension to the Village Hall. We have had a number of ideas put forward. Some of them have been impractical, like the all-weather football pitch, that would have had a large fence all round it to protect the neighbouring property. Some of them we have considered and developed and talked around, and then decided to drop because we felt that there is not sufficient demand.
Into this last category goes the second large room in the hall, which could be used to play badminton in. This was one of the first driving forces on which the hall extension was based. But it is now felt that there is not enough demand to warrant going ahead with it. The number of groups pushing to use a new room roughly the size of the present main hall, has not been significant and, as a result, the idea of this extra room has been dropped.
This is the view of the team which is considering options to develop the Village Hall. It has met regularly every month or so for more than a year, and in that time has considered and evaluated many different possibilities for the Hall. The process was helped considerably in the initial stages by the ideas and plans put forward by a professional architect. These plans were worked on, and added to, many times to create the options considered by the team.
This architect has recently been approached again to provide some fresh thoughts, after the team felt it was not happy at the way things were going. The new plans will be discussed carefully over the coming months, and as the thought processes start to consolidate, the developments will be presented through the Marigold. Watch this space!
VILLAGE QUIZ
We will be holding the Annual Village Quiz as usual next year in the Village Hall on Saturday 31 March in its regular slot, and an excellent occasion I'm sure it will be. It starts at 7.45 p.m.
Al Christmas, our quiz master, will no doubt baffle us all with some tricky questions and there will be the same top quality supper. Put all this with some excellent company and some good quality wine and beer, and you have the recipe for a very pleasant night.
If you want to grab five friends to make up a team of six, then come along and join us. Tickets are available from Viv on 300678.
BOOKING SECRETARY
The Village Hall booking arrangements will be changing as a result of a change in the Hall Booking Secretary. We say thanks to Judith Gilmour, who is retiring as Secretary, and welcome to Ruth Hughes, who is to take over from her.
Judith has been Booking Secretary for the last couple of years and took over when the Hall was in danger of closing after it went without a Secretary for a time. Judith stepped in at a difficult time, and we are very grateful to her for the job she has done for the Hall, for the Community Association and for the village since then.
Ruth is to take over as Booking Secretary and can be contacted between Monday and Thursday for bookings, by telephone on 300185. Booking Request Forms are available from the Village Hall, or from Ruth, and should be dropped in to 47 Oaklands when they have been completed.

Clubs and Societies
Guilden Sutton Players
The Players are currently recovering from their frantic week of performances. This time it was the comedy, "Allo, Allo", by Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft, for which several new members have joined us. All the well -known characters from the T.V series were in the play, (although they may not have resembled them physically) along with the typical visual gags and innuendo we have come to expect from these writers! It was hard work, but enormous fun. Thanks to all those who helped.
With batteries recharged, we will soon be reconvening in order to plan our next production, as yet undecided, which will run from Wednesday 16th May to Saturday 19th May. If you are interested in joining us (in any capacity) please contact Robin Norrie, our Chairman, on Chester 332595, or secretary Anne Albany, on Chester 851054.

Prim Whitehouse, tel: 301177.
Cestrian Art Group
The Art Group held an exhibition of their "art" work at All Saints Church Hall, Hoole, in October. We had an ideal day weather wise, also from a selling point of view. We plan to hold another one early next year.
In November we had a very successful water colour workshop when Heather Parry-Young demonstrated "Snow Scenes" and the Royal Oak was the venue for our Christmas Dinner.
Our weekly meetings are held each Wednesday between 2.00 and 8.00 pm at St John's Church Hall, Guilden Sutton, when we will welcome anyone interested in becoming a member of our group. The last session of the year is on 13th December and we meet again on 10th January for the next 10 week period.

Parent and Toddler Group
The Parent & Toddler Group meet every Tuesday Morning (in term time) 10.30 am - 12.00 noon in the village hall. We have lots of toys and equipment suitable for ages ranging from birth to school age. We also have a craft table, which the parents seem to enjoy as much as the children!
We enjoy lots of social events throughout the year. In the summer we went to Gulliver's World and Greenacres Farm.
Mums have enjoyed many nights out and we are looking forward to our Christmas meal at the Bird in Hand on 16th December.
The Parent & Toddler Group is a great way to meet people.
Why don't you pop along one week? See you there !!!

Guilden Sutton Pre-School
This term the Pre-school has been developing the new approach to planning that we began in the summer - namely taking a well-known book as the inspiration for all our activities over a number of weeks. Hazel and the team have been looking at the book "Handa's Surprise" which tells of a young African girl's attempt to deliver a basket of fruit and how it is "sabotaged" by the local animals. The children have re-enacted the story, made necklaces for Handa, and animal masks etc. etc.
Hazel has also been able to share her experiences in using this new approach as she hosted the October meeting of the West Cheshire PLA in the village hall and shared the file on this, "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" and the other theme for this term - "Festivals". The children also benefited from a visit by a potter and they were thrilled when he returned a week later with the coil pot they had made collectively. This will be displayed periodically at pre-school.
In November we hosted our popular quiz night and hope to run another one in the spring. December brings the usual Christmas craft activities, many made using items collected by the children over half-term for our "sponsored collect" and festive frolics involving singing, jingling bells and consuming mince pies. (Oh sorry, that's the committee...... )
The children's Christmas party will take place on Wednesday 13th December. Look out for a strange looking chap dressed in red wandering around the village. The children have designed coasters and mouse mats which will make ideal family gifts and will be treasured for years.....
We have several fundraising and social events taking place over the next few months. Next year we are hoping to produce and sell a recipe book containing all our favourite child friendly recipes. If anyone in the village would like to contribute, please pass on your recipe to Pre-school.
The Pre-school is a community group, which thrives and depends on the support of local families. Although it is a validated and OFTSED inspected nursery education provider and is run by a dedicated team of qualified staff and committee members, it is essentially a happy place where each child is valued and welcomed and encouraged to develop at their own pace.
For further information about the pre-school, or for an application form, please contact Anna Morris (Chair)- Tel: 300034, Moira Wright (Secretary) - Tel: 345401 or visit the pre-school any morning and speak to Hazel Crane the Supervisor.
Badminton
The badminton season is now in full swing and the club is enjoying a successful season, however we have a few vacancies for senior members. We .meet every Monday and Tuesday evening at 8.00pm in the Village Hall.
We have accepted several new juniors into the thriving coaching groups.
Alison Cruse, Joanna Henderson and David Armstrong have been successful in transferring into the County Under 17 Squad and they are now playing at Christleton badminton club to gain league and greater playing experience.
We hope to enter juniors in the Schools Tournaments later in the season.

Women's Institute
Our September talk by Betty Manford of Cheshire County Council Trading Standards was very informative and interesting with lots of helpful hints. In October we held our Produce Show which was a great success with a record number of entries and the overall group winners were Pam Harvey - Produce; Anne Jones - Flowers; Jill Beavan - Photographic; Margaret Graham - Handicraft.
Two of our members have celebrated special events this year - Ada & John Jones their Diamond Wedding anniversary and Laura Baxter her 90th Birthday.
Our social events have included an enjoyable and successful Safari Supper and British Food Taster evening. In August we held a coffee morning, the proceeds of which were donated to Claire House Children's Hospice. Their representative explained how the children's hospices provide respite and terminal care, both in the hospice and at home, for children who suffer from conditions which mean they will die before they reach adulthood, and how the house offers ample provision for play and recreational activities as well as space for peace and reflection.
On the 14th November several members represented Guilden Sutton, when the Cheshire Federation cerebrated 80 years, with a service at Chester Cathedral.
Our future events include a Carol Service at the Liverpool Philharmonic, a talk by Mr Cummings on the "History of Bridge Street," and our annual party in January.
We meet on the first Tuesday of each month at St John's Church hall at 7.30pm.Visitors, new members and old members are always welcome. For further information contact Jill Beavan Tel; 301015.

Sutton Six 10K and Fun Runs
The Sutton Six 10K was held this year on Sunday 24 th September. Compared to last year the weather was kind to us, at least up to the end of the main 10K race. A record number of competitors lined up for the start at 11.00 am outside the old School. First to complete the 6.25 mile course at the Village Hall was Mike Girvan from Warrington AC in 31min 29 secs. Mike is a Veteran runner of some distinction and can always be counted on to put in a good performance. Last year Mike set the course record for all vets under 50 and only narrowly missed the record again this year. Just to emphasise that this is a race for all levels the last runner crossed the line in 69 min 52 secs. It was very nice to see that a growing proportion of runners were not club members, swelling the entry total significantly. I believe that some were running their first race ever with us.
As the last competitors from the main race were coming in, the weather started to deteriorate markedly, just in time for the start of the Fun Run. Fifty youngsters (again up on last year's entry) started off at 12.15pm from Hilltop Road, to complete two laps of Oaklands (about 11/2 miles) before finishing back at the Village Hall. All finishers were given a medal as a token of their achievement. Unfortunately it turned into more of a character building exercise than fun run, as the rain came down like stair rods, and everybody got thoroughly soaked. A creditable 48 people finished the course in spite of the weather.
For the second year Guilden Sutton Cubs/Scouts and mums and dads were out in force inside and outside the Village Hall selling refreshments to runners and their friends before and after the race. Akela (Philippa Wood) said they made about £85 for their funds in the process. The Cubs themselves helped out at the water station at the finish, providing much needed sustenance for tired runners. For the first time the Scouts had set up a barbecue. Just as all the hungry runners returned from their exertions the heavens opened and drove all the potential customers indoors. Ah well, there is always next year! Many thanks to Ian Ford and Duncan Henderson for all their hard work in such appalling conditions.
Thanks go out to the village residents who, together with a large contingent of West Cheshire AC club members, marshalled the course and made the day another great success overall. Thanks also to those who moved their cars for us and provided support for the runners, whilst we swarmed all over the Village for a few hours. Should anybody be inspired enough to come and run with us at West Cheshire AC, based at Cheshire County Sports Club, Upton, please contact Richard Batterham. We cater for all abilities, so if you want to get out and run as part of a group you will be made welcome. Come and join us.

CHRISTMAS CAROLS
We have again arranged to sing carols round the Christmas Tree in the Village Hall on Monday 18th December, starting at 6-45pm. It will be very informal and ideal for all ages. We shall sing carols for about 45 minutes and then have seasonal refreshments, and we hope that Father Christmas will be able to drop in and meet the children. So do join us, it will be great fun and a good way to start Christmas week - and if you can manage to make a few mince pies, bring them along with you.
CHRISTMAS PRESENTS
We still have some Guilden Sutton Millennium Mugs available, with the attractive marigold design, which would make ideal presents. Also tea towels showing 7 village scenes and village greeting cards. They will be on sale at the Carols evening or can be obtained from Bob Armitage.
PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION
The exhibition of photos of Guilden Sutton Past and Present proved a great draw at the Village Fete. It is still available for village groups to display at their meetings. If you would like to do so please speak to Jill or John Beavan on 301015, but hurry up because the photos will be taken down and put in an album early in the New Year.

THE MILLENNIUM TAPESTRY
We would like to thank all the people who designed and worked items for this. It was unveiled in the Village Hall at the Fun Day and makes a welcoming feature in the entrance.
The work is being documented as part of the National Heritage Stitch 2000 project and it would be helpful to us if outstanding contributions could be completed as soon as possible.
